WATCH: Katy Perry’s new “Firework” video, dedicated to the “It Gets Better” Project

Katy Perry just released a music video for her song “Firework,” which she dedicated to the It Gets Better Project.

On October 28, she posted on her Twitter account:

I am officially dedicating my new video to #itgetsbetter, because everyone has the spark to be a FIREWORK.

Dave Meyers, the director of the video, wanted it to be “100% real,” so they moved away from the Hollywood feel and found real people rather than actors.

“Finding two gay guys in Budapest was a challenge, because it’s not as accepted there as it is in West Hollywood. I found an actual, real couple.” Meyers said in an interview with MTV.

Recently, Pink told indemand.fm that her ”Raise Your Glass” video will celebrate gay rights by featuring a gay wedding.

Am I the only person who finds his “I found an actual, real couple” cringe-worthy? It’s like “Oh look, I found an exotic species.”

And really? We’re supposed to applaud her for dedicating less than 3 seconds of her video to the LGB community? What is that kiss doing for everyone struggling out there? How is it going to help anyone?

If anyone feels like this video helped them, I’m glad, I just don’t think she should try to make herself seem like some kind of savior.

An “actual, real couple” is in reference to the people in the video not being actors, they’re a real couple. You don’t see that too often in videos.

Why do you expect it to directly help people? No, it’s not directly helping people, but inclusion of LGBT themes in pop culture and media is important for moving society forward.

The more LGBT themes that appear in mainstream media, the more accepting it becomes. Would we have seen this 20 years ago? No. And its people like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Pink who are helping the movement forward.

Sure, they can directly help people, but they can do much more using their career as a platform to promote progress in the LGBT movement. Celebrities are influencers. They have huge audiences and this is probably one of the best things we could ask them to do.

I’m sure this video will influence many people.
